Alison Taylor was County Archaeologist for 21 years and has been Editor and President of Cambridge Antiquarian Society. Publications include archaeological studies of villages in South Cambridgeshire and Cambridge: the Hidden History. Her talk will look at the strategies behind the development of Cambridge Castle, the roles it played in local and national defence, and its long civilian life.

Ajax Quartet Recital

Founded in 2016 at the University of Colorado, the Ajax Quartet is an emerging string quartet comprised of violinists Tom Yaron and Renee Hemsing Patten, violist Mario Rivera, and cellist Eric Haugen. In this recital they are joined by Emil Duncumb, Piano. Currently, they are the graduate quartet-in-residence at the University of Colorado. Tour highlights from the 2017-18 season include a tour to the United Kingdom with engagements in London, Cambridge, and Oxford.

Degas and his Sculpture

Degas is remembered as a painter, print-maker and photographer but his work as a sculptor remains little known and frequently misunderstood. Dr. Victoria Avery FSA, Keeper, Applied Arts at the Fitzwilliam Museum, will explain how and why Degas made his sculpture in clay, wax and plastilene, and investigate whether Degas would have approved of his heirs having these translated into limited edition bronzes after his death.

Son et Lumière 2

An exploratory concert given by Amanda Dean (mezzo soprano) and the St. Augustine’s Singers conducted by Philip Mead. Stunning visual images by leading artists will be accompanied by improvised vocal sounds. Berio’s extraordinary vocal Sequenza 111 will be performed by Amanda, and an evocation of the vocal sounds of cavemen and women will receive its premiere.
